2018 Miles for Moffitt

Team Heart & Sole

"HEY BABY!" "I GOTTA GIVE YOU A HUG!" "AW, SUGAR!"- Famous words from our one and only, our "Moffitt Mayor", our Margie. A 20 year survivor of Colon Cancer, she fought a brave fight this year against a new foe - Lung Cancer. Sadly on May 11, she gained her wings and all of Moffitt united in sorrow.

Margie Schwerdt was an integral part of Moffitt and probably knew just about everyone - employees AND patients. She embodied what we all strive for - to put patients first. As the vivacious redhead at the Gold information desk, Margie gave her all daily to make sure every person entering Moffitt's doors was greeted with enthusiasm and made to feel exceptionally welcomed. Employees were encouraged and patients were made to feel cared for and less afraid. Even now so many people continue to comment on how Margie's compassion made them each feel loved, strong and made their time at Moffitt special. Her lasting impact on hundreds of patients and our hospital can never be compared.

Those of us who were touched by her friendship, warm hugs, and daily encouragement were truly blessed. Margie's love and radiant light will continue to live on and inspire us.

On Saturday, December 8, 2018, Team Heart & Sole (Moffitt Patient Experience) is participating in the 13th annual Miles for Moffitt run/walk event in memory of Margie Schwerdt and calling it Miles for Margie. Every dollar of every team member's registration fee … and every dollar our fundraising efforts bring in … go completely to support lifesaving cancer research at Moffitt Cancer Center. There is no better way to commemorate Margie's life and the place she held so dear.

Please join us as we walk in memory of our beautiful friend and work together to end cancer!
