Together We Will (Fight Cancer)
Together We Will work to end cancer … and we need your help!
On Saturday, December 8, 2018, Our team is participating in the 13th annual Miles for Moffitt run/walk event. All proceeds go completely to support lifesaving cancer research at Moffitt Cancer Center. Moffitt researchers are at the very front lines of the effort to defeat cancer. They've already made so many amazing breakthroughs, and cancer patients, like my Dad (Mark Buchanan) here in Florida and around the world have benefited from their efforts.
My Dad, Mark Buchanan has impacted so many lives at IRCS. In October of 2017, he was diagnosed with Non-hodgkins Lymphoma - a condition that occurs when the body produces too many abnormal lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. He underwent chemotherapy for five months, but after having no response, was put through a clinical trial called Car-T Therapy. This therapy requires drawing blood from patients and separating out the T cells. Next, the T cells are genetically engineered to produce receptors on their surface called chimeric antigen receptors, or "CARs". The final step is the infusion of the CAR T cells into the patient. The engineered cells further multiply in the patient’s body, and with guidance from their engineered receptor, recognize and kill cancer cells that harbor the antigen on their surfaces.
After the therapy, my dad was announced cancer free! However, he relapsed in September of 2018, and will be going back and restarting his trial of treatments in October. I wanted to start this team to support Moffitt and their research, and as a thank you for all that they have done for my family, and especially my Dad.
That's why I'm asking YOU to support the "Together We Will (Fight Cancer)" team in our Miles for Moffitt run/walk — either by signing up to participate yourself (I'd love to have you on the team!), or by giving a tax-deductible gift to support our efforts. Whether you can give $10 or $100, every dollar will help bring closer the day when cancer is beaten. Please do what you can to help. Thank you so much!
